ORIGINAL JASON SHEIN BLOG and NEWS ARTICLE:

How many young, innocent people are we going to end up losing this year because repeat offenders are still out there drinking and driving?! I'm disgusted to see another person doing NOTHING WRONG only to lose his life because someone wanted to get wasted and drive. To the friends and family of Jason, I am beyond sorry to hear of your loss today. Esquivel Persi needs to spend the rest of his life behind bars!

Jason Shein was on Thanksgiving break from the University of Miami and had just had a farewell dinner with three friends. After leaving the restaurant with his friends they were struck by repeat DUI offender Esquivel Persi.

Jason Shein is survived by his mother, Betsy, father, Albert, his sister Deena Shein; and his sister Jami Anspach and her twins.

  4. I am very sorry to hear of this tragic story. I have known so many people that have been taken by a drunk driver. It's not right and as long as judges are beyond lenient on these guys this will keep happening. I know of someone who was killed this year by a drunk driver who crossed the double yellow line. The judge gave the driver only 6 months. The murdered man leaves beyond a pregnant wife and all of her family is overseas. I just don't get it.

  7. Thank you for posting this story. Jason is my brother-in-law and we are all trying to cope with this tragedy. My wife (his sister) will never be the same without him. I am greatful that there are people like you who bring an awareness to this issue.

  8. My name is Heather. I happened to be driving a couple of minutes behind jason and his friends when we saw the accident and my friends and I were one of the first people at the scene. Nobody can truly understand how something like this affects you until it actually happens to you. My friend and I are both nurses and were sick to our stomachs that there was nothing we could do. Everybody was spreading rumors at the scene about how the "21 year old boys" must have been drunk, when in actuality, it was the 46 year old man who will have to live his whole life knowing that he killed an innocent man. I have never been through or seen something like this in my life and I know its going to haunt me for the rest of my life. Everybody in the car was asking to be woke up from this nightmare, I wish I was able to wake them up. I'm very sorry to the friends and family of Jason, they are in my thoughts and prayers. Although I didn't personally know him, I know that he will be greatly missed by everyone.

  10. You always think it will never happen to someone you know and then this. Jason grew up two houses from my family. We've known him since he was a baby. Jason and our son were best friends as youngsters. He was a terrific young man an incredible future in front of him. His family is devasted. We're all devasted. Lets hope the court system doesn't let us down and puts Jason's murderer behind bars for a very long time.

  13. Our hearts go out to the family. We have known Jason for twelve years. He was a great kid. We truly hope the person who did this rots in jail for life.

  14. Jason's life has touched so many.
Hopefully his love will remain with us and his family eventually feel some sort of peace, too young, too soon.....

  15. I'm a career EMT in NYS. Even though I never knew Jason, he is still a part of a fraternity of life savers that mourns any time one of their own is taken, whether in the line of duty, or otherwise. Stories like Jason's make those times that we are called upon to treat the people that cause these accidents that much harder. But we do. From everything I have read about Jason here, I think you would have found him doing the same with passion and professionalism. I also hope all of you who knew him can take solace in the legacy that he has left behind. He sounds like he was an incredible young man, who despite how much he had left to live for, had already lived so much. Hold his memory close to your hearts and pass along his kindness and addicting personality to others.

  16. It's an absolute tragedy that we've lost another fine young american to drunk drivers. In light of the recent media circus over the intentional killing of an illegal immigrant on long island I was wondering if anyone knows if Persi Esquivel is an illegal immigrant? The media hasn't said anything and that's by design. In today climate and with our compromised media an american life doesn't have equal value with those of the illegal aliens. If this driver was an illegal alien it should be noted and us american citizens should hold a few rallys of our own about having had enough with these illegal aliens killing our children.

  17. I do a lot of DUI tracking (specifically deaths caused by drunk drivers). A high % of deaths are caused by illegal immigrants and/or repeat offenders. Many are unlicensed and obviously don't understand our laws in the US, which are weak anyway. I won't mention what part of the world these people come from, but over 7,000 innocent people are murdered every year from people who should not be driving on our streets in the first place (illegals and repeat offenders). What's ironic is the drunk driver always seems to survive the accident just fine, but the innocent person the run over is dead in a second.

  18. I am Jason's sister Deena. He was the greatest little brother in the world, and I will do what i can to bring awareness to drinking and driving and to the making punishments stronger for those who cause these innocent people to be taken from us. Love you Jay.

  19. I am Jason's sister Deena's friend..I have known Jason for a very long time. I hope the drunk bastard and his family know how many peoples lives he has hurt. I dont understand how someone who deals drugs will go to jail for thirty years but someone who murderers a twenty one year old can get a max of 15 years. Something needs to be done!!

  20. I am Deena Sheins best friend and have known Jason since he was a baby. The penalties are not strong enough bc people arent scared to get in their car and drink and drive over and over it is a senseless crime that really isnt worth the $15 cab ride. People that continue to do it are playing russian roulette with other peoples lives. Jasons death is a terrible tragic loss and we will do everything we can to keep it in the spotlight for as long as it takes until something changes and people are terrified of the consequences of a DWI.
A little part of all of us died that night and my friend and her family will never be the same.

  21. oh my. I am so so sorry. I was just reading a NYC blog about driving in horrible conditions and it linked to this story. I am so so sorry to Jason's sisters and family for this tragic loss. my husband's name is Jason and I just can feel from his picture and your words that he was one of the good ones. It is inexplicable. I am so sad for someone I never knew. I'll keep looking to see if there is a scholarship in his name or if you need any help, ill keep checking here. Some things just don't make sense.

  22. To the person who wrote this last message on Dec. 15th, thank you for writing about my brother who you did not know. We are eventually going to have a scholarship or something in his name. It has been about a month now, but as soon as I do, I will let you know by including it on this site. If you have face book, there is a page called "people who miss Jason Shein". Thanks again, its nice when strangers are impacted by this in a positive way.
